Inside Etsy Studio Visits || Studio Cloth and Ink

Helen - owner, maker, designer and curator of Cloth & Ink with Mr. Duffy

Each month we will be bringing you 'Inside Etsy'. That means you get to take a peek inside the studio's of amazing Etsy shops. They share with us their workspace and what inspires them. This month we are visiting Helen of Cloth & Ink's studio in Boulder, Colorado.

Do you have a shop mascot?

Meet Mr Duffy, Cloth and Ink's customer service representative, always ready to help with a friendly wag of his tail! He could be CEO of this business with all the decision making he sits through, if only he wouldn't sleep on the job.

Where is your studio located?

Hi and welcome to Cloth & Ink! When I signed up for a studio tour a few months back my location was a very different place to where you see today. In February, my family relocated from Texas to Boulder, Colorado.

I am so inspired by my new surroundings and all the creative people I’ve met in the short time I’ve been here. There is a really strong handmade movement here and great support for local designers and artists. Buying local is a huge motivation for folks and I’m excited to embrace this community. I just have to walk out my door to be inspired here, there is such a positive energy to the place and of course there’s the breathtaking views. Although I’ll always be an ocean girl at heart, these mountains have won me over already. As for my studio, I'm still growing into my new space but I love the light that streams in all day, it's a happy place to work.

How did you get started in your craft? What inspires you?

I have a long history with textiles from my childhood home, through under-grad school, to working in fiber research and then garment manufacturing. Starting Cloth & Ink came from a lifelong love of design, a resistance to mass produced products and making the most of a change in circumstance. Working in the industry, I saw mass production first hand and found it stifled creativity. I left the industry with the thought that next time I would do it my way, designing for myself and focusing on small production. That time came a couple of years ago, after moving from the UK to the USA, a relocation meant leaving my job as a teacher and brought about the beginning of Cloth & Ink. I began as a screen printer, designing and printing my own fabrics for home decor but it has evolved since then and moved beyond home decor to
women’s accessories. I love to try out new things and see where I can go next.

more from nature: sea anemones, boardwalk in Washington State, beach pebbles in England

The inspiration for my prints comes from my adventures in the great outdoors and getting close to nature. I love to take photos and use these as a starting point for my prints which develop through sketching and watercolors. It can be as simple as a flower in the garden or as grand as a mountain range. An influence on my style of graphics definitely comes from my love of Scandinavian aesthetics, I’m always drawn to this design style so it has become prevalent in my own work.

What are the top 3 tools that are most important in your craft?

Only three! Well, I’m not often seen without a tape measure around my neck these days, it’s the hottest fashion accessory in my house. I absolutely need a really good pair of scissors...and you better not get caught cutting paper with them. Lastly, I’d have to say my hands, they are what does the hard work after all.

Does music play a role in your creating or do you like to work in silence?

I definitely prefer to work with some music in the air. I love listening to some folk/indie melodies while I work, especially The Lumineers, a little Munford & Sons and a lot of Of Monsters and Men right now. Anything that gives me an excuse to have little dance around the studio really. I can see myself following some of the local folk and bluegrass bands here in Colorado, I’m amazed at the local talent. I also love to listen NPR and of course I stay in tune with the UK music listening to BBC Radio 1 online.

What are the greatest rewards of creating something that is handmade?

One of the greatest rewards for me is knowing the journey that a product has been on to become what it is. Knowing the entire history from design, to the materials and the construction and then being able to share this with others and see their enthusiasm for something I've made is such a buzz. I love to share what I do and encourage others to have a go.

Crushing on the Brass Tones!

1. Vintage Mid Century Lighting by Project Sarafan
2.  Big Brass Letter N or U by Monki Vintage
3.  Blur Bubbles Golden Ring by La Chica de los Anillos
4.  Modern Chandelier Earrings by lolide

Brass.  Golden and earthy - I'm diggin' it!  Lately, I've really been into brass tones and the warmth of of this metal's color.  With a darker edge than gold, brass has a natural feel and goes great with a look that is modern, yet fluid and easy.  Perfect for those who want to dress up their decor with a pop of golden tones or those who want to add the richness of brass to their accessories.  I've been playing with brass toned accessories for some new summer outfits - linen pants, light t-shirt and some geometric brass earrings make for an organic look!

How will you add brass to your life - home decor or fashion accessory?  Do tell!

Garden Prep 101 || Start Planting!

If you are a gardener at heart, then this time of year is probably your favorite. I am lucky enough to live in a climate where we can actually start seeing blooms as early as the last week of February. That means we have about eight good months to get our hands dirty and tend to our gardens.  One of my favorite Spring activities is making the multiple trips to various nurseries.  I love looking for new plants to tuck into spaces, searching for the perfect organic fertilizer and just getting inspired by nature.

Etsy has so many garden goodies it was hard to choose what I wanted to share with you. I wanted to focus on getting ready to garden, which actually takes a lot of work, but is well worth the results if you prep your beds and get all your supplies before you start digging!

My Garden Prep 101 choices:
1. Ceramic Garden Markers || Orly Design
2. Ceramic Bird House || L & M Studio
3. Heirloom Seed Kit || Sarah Rainwater Design
4. Garden Melodies Print || Created by Storm
5. Waxed Canvas Garden Tote || Artifact Bags
6. Organic Herbal Salve || Roots Soap Co.
7. Chalkboard Pots || One December
8. Air Plant Terrarium || Sea and Asters

We kicked off our monthly Etsy Style Guide Challenge this month with a fun twist to our theme where we combined both Earth Day and Mother's Day!  Since the Earth is often referred to as Mother Earth, we took the opportunity to pair them together to see what sort of creative collections our curators would come up with.  It's always a treat and never an easy task to choose just one winner, but this winning collection by Brooke of Etsy shop Peiffer Studios was a home run hit!  Before I reveal her title, take a moment to appreciate Brooke's feminine collection.  She uses not just color to create a soothing and airy guide, but she's telling a specific story which illustrates the challenge theme most beautifully.  All becomes clear when you read her title, Mother Earth is a True Bohemian.  So lovely and absolutely stunning Brooke - Congratulations!

***

We had 100 Style Guide submissions this month and we were blown away with all the amazing titles and styles.  Each month after the challenge is over, Amber and I share our list of favorites with each other before we pick a winner and honorable mentions.  We normally have many which overlap, but this month - we only had one!  And that was Brooke's winning Style Guide!  It's always fun to see which ones we each choose and I'll be sharing below four honorable mentions from both of our selections.

Although our selections didn't overlap, we both loved the creative styling and modern sensibilities of one of our new curators - Charlotte of Etsy shop The Vintage Vogue Story.  This stunning collection below uses a very limited color palette to gently guide the eye through and creates a soothing mood, like a quiet misty morning.  One can just admire the gorgeous earth centered styling, but then you read the title and it all pulls together.  What a wonderful collection, Charlotte - now I'm singing that John Mayer song!

In her collection below titled Child of the Earth and Sea, Jill of Etsy shop Be Something New takes us back to nature.  Using sand tones as a base, Jill primes her style guide canvas and pulls in items which all share a beachy, earthy quality.  Her collection celebrates the organic spirit of Earth Day and highlights gift ideas for the all natural mom!  Mother's Day is right around the corner, so it's not too early to start planning ahead to find that perfect gift.  Feeling inspired and see many gifts that my mom would surely enjoy - great selections, Jill!

Keeping in line with our tradition, we're finishing off our Style Guide Challenge with a collection by Jenn of Etsy shop Palimpsestic.  We always look for the beat from Jenn as she has a natural talent for telling some very entertaining stories through her style guides.  She's always coming up with something new and fresh as she adds her own unique spin to the challenge theme.  What's up this month?  Well, Jenn has captured a picture of mom back in the day when she was a flower-power kind of gal!  Are you smiling yet?  How clever, right?  This is why Jenn is our official resident stylist and we always love ending our challenge post with a peek into her world.  Thank you for always playing along, Jenn - you're the best!
